Introduction

My name is Michelle, a nineteen year old female about to embark on a study abroad trip to Greece. My first attraction to the trip was the theme, "Enter the Labyrinth." I have had an interest in labyrinths for quite some time and was excited to include such a theme with a month long tour of Greece. Through my classes this past year, I have learned again and again how important Greece has been to the development of western culture. And while I cannot list everything right now, my interest in philosophy and the courses I have been taking have been a definite tease to visiting this amazing country. I am pleased to say that in less then one month, I will be in Greece and hopefully one step closer to understanding the amazing ideas that have come out of such a beautiful part of the world.

I'm currently pursuing a degree in liberal studies, and then will hopefully advance to a master's degree in philosophy. Going to Greece gives direct support to this degree, as philosophy was born in Greece with Socrates and Plato. In addition, much of what I will be learning in my liberal studies courses are works from the ancient Greek era, such as the Iliad and the Odyssey. Much of what our civilization is based on can be credited to the Greeks. With my degree I hope to become a university/college professor so I can teach the importance of ancient civilizations to future generations, as history is an extremely important and widely forgotten subject. In addition to working in an educational institution, I would like to work with the government to try and solve many of our issues today. I believe that a firm background in philosophy will help to create an ethical justice system for everyone, and I intend to use my knowledge of past civilizations to provide examples as to what did and did not work and how we can further and make the best use of our government.

The study abroad experience, along with my studies, will hopefully give me enough material in which to publish my first articles in journals of philosophy, religion, ethics, mythology and related fields. After a collection of articles, I hope to publish my first book. As a person with high moral character, I find that many of today’s youth especially do not understand what it means to be a person living in Canada. We are extremely fortunate for everything we have and everything that has been given to us. I would very much like to spread this message.

I 'Enter the Labyrinth' with the knowledge that I will be completely blown away by everything I see and learn. I also go with the knowledge that I should not expect too much, or expect anything. I will see and learn what I see and learn, and I will not take away any regrets. My only regret will be that I wasn't able to stay any longer.
